The South West Blues Club will be represented at Blues at Bridgetown this year by Hooch. Three of the four musicians, vocalist and harp player, Dave ‘Hound dog’ Bassett, drummer, ‘Rocket’ Rod McCosker and guitarist Ron Kinson were founders of the well know local blues band Stumptown.
With a new bass guitarist, ‘Fozz’ Matt Foster, the band is moving in a fresh direction but still anchored firmly in the blues. Hound Dog Dave’s passionate growling vocals and raunchy harp are interlaced with Ron’s guitar wizardry. The rhythm section, with Fozz on the big wires locking with Rod on the skins, provides a hypnotic, beefy beat to all their songs.
They play a mix of old and new blues, but almost always delightful rare pearls, familiar to only a handful of blues enthusiasts. Hooch is a great example of a prolific number of bands created by the South West Blues Club and a testament to the club’s mandate, to keep the blues alive.
